DIGGER | "Who is Digger" Discussion | In theaters Friday
DIGGER is a comedy about a powerful man racing to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he unleashed. It is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and stars Tom Cruise.
At the center of DIGGER is Digger Rockwell, introduced as “the most powerful person in the world.” The film begins with his attempt to prove himself humanity’s savior before the catastrophe he set in motion destroys everything. The premise—that a person with immense influence is both the cause of the crisis and someone claiming the role of its solution—creates the work’s central tension.
Tom Cruise plays the titular role of Digger Rockwell, with Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons also appearing. The film is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The official description defines it as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions,” focusing not on the disaster itself but on the clash between power and ego in confronting it.
The film was shot entirely in VistaVision and will be released in theaters and IMAX. It opens in North America on October 2, 2026, with the international release beginning September 30. Combining large-format cinematography with a theatrical release, the film is expected to push its characters’ exaggerated savior narrative and the scale of the catastrophe through the physicality of the screen.
