With Streets of Rage 4 joining Crunchyroll Game Vault, the side-scrolling beat ’em up that has continued on consoles and PC can now be enjoyed through a mobile subscription service. The Game Vault edition is available for download on iOS and Android and requires a Crunchyroll Mega Fan or Ultimate Fan membership. Rather than turning the original game into a separate new release, it is being offered in a format tailored to the mobile environment.
The game is set in Wood Oak City, which has been taken over by a new crime syndicate. Axel, Blaze, Cherry, Floyd, and others fight to reclaim the streets, adding combos and aerial attacks to the traditional beat ’em up structure of progressing sideways across a single screen. The service page also highlights online co-op play, touch controls, and Bluetooth controller support.
The original game was first released for PC and consoles on April 30, 2020. Published by Dotemu and developed with the participation of Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games, it carries the classic series’ sensibility into the modern era through Lizardcube’s hand-drawn animation and an electronic music-focused soundtrack. Accordingly, this Game Vault release can be viewed as the game joining a mobile service, distinct from the original release date in 2020.
The game can be played solo, as well as through co-op, where players take on groups of enemies together. Touch controls suit quick rounds of street combat, while controller support provides an option for players who prioritize input precision—practical differences that characterize the mobile edition.
