Rodeo FX Shared Their House of the Dragon Season 3 VFX Breakdown
Rodeo FX has released a breakdown of its 394 VFX shots for House of the Dragon Season 3. The work combines six dragons, digital environments, and the large-scale Battle of Tumbleton.
Rodeo FX has released a visual effects breakdown for 《House of the Dragon》 Season 3. The studio handled a total of 394 shots, and this release specifically shows that the dragon action was completed not simply through character animation, but through the simultaneous work of crowds, fire, destruction, and environmental compositing.
Six Dragons and Two Types of Cities
Rodeo FX’s scope of work included six dragons: Tessarion, Silverwing, Moondancer, Caraxes, Vermithor, and Seasmoke. In King’s Landing, the studio extended streets and buildings so that the filmed set would connect naturally, while Tumbleton was built as a largely CG environment. In other words, invisible set extensions and a virtual city at the center of the battle were handled in parallel within a single season.
The Layers Required for the Battle of Tumbleton
The Battle of Tumbleton in the latter half of the season unfolds across hundreds of shots, approximately 100 of which involved crowd work. Dragon fire, collapsing architecture, smoke, and atmospheric effects are layered on top of that. Because a change to one element can affect the movement and lighting of other elements, as well as the destruction effects, the breakdown allows viewers to examine not only the finished image but also the order in which each layer comes together.
Reusing Silverwing’s Assets
Silverwing is a dragon designed and animated by Rodeo FX in Season 2, and was used again in Season 3 for scenes above Tumbleton and in the battle. Rather than simply repeating the existing asset, the studio expanded the scale of the battle by adding new flight, fire, and environmental interactions. Season 3 began on June 21, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max in the United States, and was released on Coupang Play in Korea on June 23.
