How to Recreate Saber from Type-Moon's Fate/Stay Night in 3D

This is a work that reconstructs Saber not as a 2D character, but as a serene doll sculpture. Illustrator and concept artist Sarah Paiva completed a 3D work based on Saber from Fate/stay night, choosing a face and texture closer to a BJD doll than to a typical anime style.
A Silhouette Without Armor
The starting point for the work was a bust concept created in 2024. Paiva revisited the idea, which had not progressed into a 3D model at the time, and developed it through direct sculpting. Although she referenced official images of Artoria Pendragon and photographs of clothing folds, she decided to leave out the armor because it disrupted the flexibility of the form. This choice shifted the composition's focus from recreating the character's armed image to the face, pose, and flow of the fabric.
Sculpting That Began with Simple Forms
Paiva established the pose with a simple blockout, treating the arms as cylinders and the torso as a sphere, then added details. She first created the body in a symmetrical state before moving it into the final pose, and sculpting was carried out in ZBrush. Broadly studying separate reference materials to understand the structure of the clothing was also key to transforming a flat design into a three-dimensional form that works from multiple angles.
The Feel of ‘Painted Gold’ Instead of a Metallic Material
The colors were handled with ZBrush's Polypaint. She added reddish, warm tones and subtle texture to the skin, while darkening the folds and areas of the clothing that were difficult for light to reach. In particular, rather than applying a metallic material directly to the gold sections, she rendered them to look like a hand-painted sculpture. Marmoset Toolbag was used for rendering and Photoshop for final adjustments, with an emphasis on gentle lighting rather than strong contrast.
Fate/stay night is TYPE-MOON's first commercial work, a visual novel depicting battles between magi and Servants surrounding the Holy Grail. The original Japanese release came out on January 30, 2004, and this 3D work is a personal three-dimensional interpretation of Saber's design, not a new port or sequel to the game.
