KeyFlow is a free tool that brings repetitive animation tasks in Maya and a separate review stage into a single workflow. The dockable toolkit, positioned above Maya’s timeline, includes more than 25 tools, while the standalone KeyFlow Studio handles reference videos and shot reviews. Both apps are included in the same download, but Studio can also be used without Maya.

From Reference to Scene

In Studio, you can cut and export the necessary section of a video, then send it as an image plane to the active camera in Maya or Blender with KeyFlow installed. The scene FPS is matched at the same time. This is convenient for checking reference timing against the scene, but if the tool is not connected to the receiving DCC, you will need to open the exported folder and import it manually.

Differences in Review Connectivity

The two clips can be compared in four ways: wipe, overlay, difference highlighting, and onion skin. Frame-by-frame drawings, text, and shape annotations, as well as timeline bookmarks, are also supported. For real-time reviews, you can choose between a local network, the KeyFlow relay server, or a self-hosted relay. An internal network offers low latency but is not encrypted, while the relay server is simpler for external collaboration; studios that need stronger security controls may be better suited to configuring their own relay.

Maya Features and Limitations

The toolkit provides features such as pose and animation mirroring, copying transforms in relative space, a pose library, space switching, baking, and playblast management. It supports official Autodesk Maya 2021–2026 on Windows 10 and 11, but does not support Maya LT, macOS, or Linux. Although it is currently a free product that can also be used for commercial work, its license keys can be activated on up to 4 devices for one year, so these operating conditions should be checked before deploying it across a team.
