A family’s fracture on the eve of Christmas is the starting point of this film. In A Dog's Perfect Christmas, a teenage girl, her grandfather, and his basset hound work together to protect a home in crisis. Netflix introduces the film as a holiday drama, highlighting its central premise of placing the family dog at the heart of relationships as the family begins to fall apart.

Three Characters Holding the Family Together

Rather than focusing on resolving a major incident, the story’s goal is to “keep the household together.” The girl and her grandfather belong to different generations, while the loyal basset hound serves as a link between the two and their family. Thus, the Christmas setting is not merely decorative; it functions as a test of whether the scattered family members can remain under one roof again.

The Original Author and the Filmmakers

The film originates from the body of work of W. Bruce Cameron, the bestselling author of 《A Dog’s Purpose》. It is directed by Cathryn Michon and stars Dennis Quaid, Milo Ventimiglia, Brooke Lena Johnson, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Jennifer Tilly, and Mary Steenburgen. Thomas Haden Church provides the voice of Winstead the basset hound.

Release in November

The U.S. Netflix release date is November 4, 2026. While preserving the familiar warmth of a holiday film, the story’s distinctive premise lies in portraying a family making its way through a crisis through cooperation between people and a dog.
