Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Set for Japanese Release on January 15, 2027

A prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM centered on Shinn Asuka in C.E. 74, opening in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027, with a North American release in February 2027.

〈Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO〉 is a prequel to the 2024 theatrical film 〈Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM〉. Filling in the gap between 〈SEED DESTINY〉 and 〈SEED FREEDOM〉, it is set in C.E. 74, when the world is gradually entering a new era after the end of a major war.

Shinn Asuka is at the center of the story. It begins with the theft of the Strike Freedom Gundam by an unidentified force and depicts what Shinn was thinking as he fought during that period. The project was originally planned as an OVA before being completed as a theatrical film.

Mitsuo Fukuda, who has led the series, serves as director, while the screenplay is by Shigeru Morita, Chiaki Morosawa, and Mitsuo Fukuda. Sunrise is handling planning and production, Bandai Namco Filmworks is producing it, and distribution is being handled by Bandai Namco Filmworks and Shochiku. The cast includes Kenichi Suzumura (Shinn Asuka), Maaya Sakamoto (Lunamaria Hawke), Akira Ishida (Athrun Zala), and Rie Tanaka (Lacus Clyne).

The release date was announced at the “GUNDAM Showcase 2026” panel at New York Comic Con in October 2026. It will be released in Japan on January 15, 2027, and is scheduled for a theatrical release in North America in February 2027, with specific dates to be announced later. The South Korean release date has not been announced.
