The Company That Ruled the Mining Town

*The Riot* is set in Sulitjelma, northern Norway, in the early 20th century—a place also known as “Sulis.” The copper mining company effectively controls the land and order of the town, operating even a private police force and its own currency. The workers labor in dangerous mine shafts but are subjected to harsh treatment, and the town becomes such an isolated place that it is called the “hell of Lapland.”

The Choice Conrad Faces

Young Conrad Nilsson, desperately seeking work, enters the mine and experiences the workers’ reality firsthand. As the control of Olof Wenström, who runs the company, grows stronger, tensions mount, and Conrad and his fellow workers decide to rise up together against the exploitation each of them has been enduring. The tension of the work arises as one young man’s struggle to make a living expands into a collective fight for workers’ rights.
