First Trailer Arrives for UPA Documentary 'Animation Mavericks'

Animation Mavericks: The Forgotten Story of UPA is a feature documentary about UPA’s origins, rise, decline, and legacy in American animation. It uses archival material, expert interviews, and animate

The feature-length documentary 《Animation Mavericks: The Forgotten Story of UPA》 traces the trajectory of UPA, the independent studio founded by artists who left Disney in 1941. Rather than dwelling on the success story of a particular character, the film focuses on how the creators who proposed an alternative to the conventions of traditional Hollywood animation came together and what changes they left behind.

Where Art Movements and Industrial History Intersect

UPA would later become known for 《Mr. Magoo》 and 《Gerald McBoing-Boing》, but the period covered by the film is a broader conflict spanning the 1930s through the 1950s. Competition among studios and executives, labor organizing, the Red Scare, and modernist art movements converged in the history of a single company. Accordingly, the documentary examines not only changes in artistic style but also the marks left on animation production by creative conditions and political pressures.

Reconstructing UPA Through Archival Materials and Reenactments

The film combines archival materials, interviews with animation experts, and stylized animated reenactments depicting moments in Hollywood history. Rather than simply listing old footage, it juxtaposes historical sources, testimony, and reenactments to weave the studio’s founding, rise, decline, and later legacy into a single narrative.

Kevin Schreck serves as director, writer, and producer, while Rachel Gitlevich participates in animation direction and production. Tim Finn is the executive producer, and Sylvie Vauzrau is also credited among the production team. The completed 103-minute film is slated for a 2027 festival screening.
