A grandmother living alone on ‘Matcha Mountain,’ a place filled with matcha snacks, discovers an injured balloon dog and cares for it. The two quickly become companions who rely on each other, and the lively new friend brings warmth and joy to the grandmother’s quiet daily life.

However, when a fierce storm sweeps them both into the sky, their relationship takes an unexpected turn. The grandmother learns that the balloon dog belongs to a family living above the clouds, and despite the sadness of parting, she lets her friend return home.

The story does not end with their farewell. Back on Matcha Mountain, the grandmother ties a cake to a balloon and sends it into the sky whenever she collects one. The connection between the two, maintained even while they are apart, brings the brief fantasy premise to a close through a tangible gesture from everyday life.

MATCHA MOUNTAIN is a 2026 graduation short from GOBELINS Paris, co-directed by Seiya Carpentier, Zijin Chen, Pauline Gisèle Gautschi, Jiamin Li, Yuanxin Ling, and Alexane Pierrot-Zago.
