‘Awake’ is a five-minute documentary short that transforms into animation the writings Mahmoud Khalil left behind during sleepless nights in U.S. immigration detention. The work begins not with an external voice explaining the events, but with sentences recorded by the detained person while separated from his family.
The Time of Detention, Narrowed Through Personal Writing
Khalil’s writings reflect together on separation from his family and on the promises surrounding democracy, justice, and human dignity. ‘Awake’ compresses broad social issues into a record written by one person at night. Rather than using the language of institutions, it conveys the time of detention through individual sensations and relationships.
The Choice of Animated Documentary
Directed and produced by Elyse Kelly and Dan Fipphen, the work constructs animated images from the content of the writing. Instead of relying on live-action recreation, it combines the sentences of the record with visual expression, showing both the distance and connection that writing leaves between physically separated family members.
A Short Record Created by Multiple Filmmakers
Production company Neon Zoo and distributor Miyu Distribution introduced the short as an animated documentary. Animation supervisor Rohan McDonald, art director Ana Mouyis, Naghmeh Farzaneh, and other members of the production team participated, adding a collective visual language to the short record that began with one night’s writing.
