Jagex Unveils Fourth RuneScape MMO Powered by Unreal Engine

Jagex has revealed an as-yet-unnamed fourth MMO in the RuneScape franchise. Set in Gielinor and in early development with Unreal Engine, the project has no announced release date or platforms.

Jagex revealed at RuneFest 2026 that it is developing a fourth MMO in the RuneScape franchise. The project, which does not yet have an official title, is set in Gielinor and is being built with Unreal Engine. As it was still in the early stages of development at the time of the announcement, neither a release date nor supported platforms had been decided.

The New Game Changes the Technical Foundation

The key point of the announcement is that Jagex is creating a separate new MMO rather than simply updating an existing game. Jagex explained that it intends to combine the depth, freedom, and community focus that have defined RuneScape for 25 years with today’s technology and game-design possibilities. However, details that will shape the actual gameplay experience—such as the combat system, monetization, and account transfers—have not yet been disclosed.

The Same Setting, a Different Stage of Development

Although it shares the common setting of Gielinor, this project is a new title distinct from roadmap announcements for RuneScape Reignited or Old School RuneScape. The fact that update plans for existing RuneScape and Old School RuneScape were also introduced at the same event provides context that the new-game announcement does not mean an immediate replacement of the existing services.

What Can Be Confirmed Right Now

The adoption of Unreal Engine indicates the direction of the project’s visual and production technology, but it does not confirm the engine version or specific features of the game. Therefore, what can be stated with certainty at this stage comes down to four points: “fourth MMO,” “Gielinor,” “Unreal Engine,” and “early development.” The official title and release schedule will need to be assessed through subsequent announcements.
