Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl is a World War II film centered on four college football players who enlist in the Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As they prepare for the invasion of Okinawa, they take part in a legendary football game. The film places the intensity of the game alongside their deployment orders to the front, depicting the period when young men who had been sports stars became soldiers.
Nicholas Galitzine plays John McLaughry, a former Brown University quarterback, while Bill Skarsgård portrays Bob Bauman, a Wisconsin player. Ray Nicholson plays Purdue’s Tony Butkovich, and Tom Francis portrays David Schreiner, who played at Wisconsin alongside Bauman. The four men competed on different college stages, but after the war they are bound together as fellow Marines.
The source material is Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book 《The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II》. The book documents the true story of college football players who enlisted in the military and came together for one game before the Battle of Okinawa. Based on that historical event, the film sheds light on both camaraderie and the losses of war.
Berg is also involved in the production through Film 44, with Brian Grazer and Alex Gayner serving as co-producers. Netflix will release the film on November 25, 2026, while its theatrical release is scheduled for October 30, ahead of that date. The Netflix title page lists it as an R-rated drama with a runtime of 2 hours and 7 minutes.
