The relationship between two young entrepreneurs who once tried to change the global financial system becomes entangled in the middle of the FTX collapse. Netflix limited series The Altruists will premiere as an eight-episode series on November 19, telling the story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison as they build a massive cryptocurrency business and ultimately face allegations of stealing $8 billion.
Two Figures Closer Than the Case
Rather than simply condensing FTX's corporate history, the series places Bankman-Fried and Ellison's romantic relationship and shared ambition at the center of the story. Julia Garner plays Ellison, while Anthony Boyle plays Bankman-Fried. As the official description calls them “Gen Z's Bonnie and Clyde,” the drama reconstructs how their intimate relationship became intertwined with decision-making at a massive business.
The Fractures Covered by the Eight Episodes
Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt serve as co-showrunners and writers, and James Ponsoldt directed the first episode. Alex Lawther, Karan Soni, Naomi Okada, Madison Hu, Matt Rife, and Eugene Young also join the main cast. Although it is based on real reporting, its defining feature is that it is a scripted drama rather than a documentary. The released trailer cuts between financial charts, offices, and private moments, presenting both the glamour of rapid growth and the tensions within the relationship.
