Pizza Tower Running on 3DS

An unofficial case of Pizza Tower running in a Nintendo 3DS environment has been revealed. The focus of this result is not an official console port of the game, but Cinnamon, a custom runner designed to run GameMaker Studio-based games on other devices. The original game was developed and published by Tour De Pizza, and was first released for PC Steam on January 26, 2023.

Building a Runtime Instead of Porting the Game

Cinnamon is an open-source reimplementation of a runner that processes the bytecode exported by GameMaker Studio games. In other words, unlike conventional emulation, which imitates an entire PC or console, this approach builds the runtime the game depends on to suit the target device. The project description introduces it as a fork of Butterscotch and lists the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U among its supported targets.

Compatibility Is a Separate Issue

This approach does not mean that every GML game will automatically run perfectly. Cinnamon specifies the bytecode versions it supports and explains that games with demanding 3D or particle effects, or games compiled to native code, may face limitations. Therefore, it is more accurate to view this run not as news of an official 3DS release of Pizza Tower, but as an experiment with a homebrew runner seeking to expand game-specific compatibility on limited handheld hardware.
