Epic Games' MetaHuman 5.6 adds real-time facial animation in MetaHuman Animator using standard webcams and many smartphones. It also supports real-time audio-driven animation, expanding the available

MetaHuman 5.6 is an update that lowers the barrier to the filming equipment needed to create high-quality digital human animations. MetaHuman Animator can now process an actor’s facial expressions in real time using a monocular camera that integrates with Unreal Engine Live Link, including most webcams and several smartphones. This expands the available options beyond the previous approach centered on stereo head-mounted cameras and iPhones.

Start Real-Time Capture with a Single Camera

Unlike offline processing, which calculates filmed footage afterward, this feature focuses on letting creators see the performance and digital character’s reactions immediately on set. Fast feedback is advantageous for live performances and previsualization work, but offline processing remains useful when results need to be adjusted according to the camera, lighting, and performance conditions.

Facial Performance Created from Voice Alone

MetaHuman Animator’s real-time, audio-based animation generates facial performance from voice without camera footage. The system reflects the speaker’s emotions, allows emotional values to be adjusted manually when necessary, and adds head movement to make the basic result more natural. In other words, it is now possible to use a camera-based approach in environments where facial capture is available and an audio-based approach for voice-centered live work.

Changes to the Production Pipeline

With MetaHuman Creator, MetaHuman Animator, and Mesh to MetaHuman integrated into a single Unreal Engine environment, character creation and performance capture can now continue within the same project. The licensing scope has also been expanded so that MetaHuman can be used in other engines and creative software. However, real-time processing does not replace all post-production work; the key is to divide real-time and offline workflows according to the precision and review process required for the final shot.
