Smallville: Absolute Justice is a two-hour Season 9 special in which the Justice Society of America enters Clark Kent's world. The legacy of an earlier generation of heroes and a threat from its past
Smallville: Absolute Justice is a two-hour special from Season 9 of *Smallville* that aired on The CW on February 5, 2010. The episode puts the Justice Society of America (JSA), a team of heroes that existed before the Justice League, front and center, creating a story in which Clark Kent’s generation comes face-to-face with the legacy of veteran heroes.
The Incident Left Behind by a Vanished Team
Sylvester Pemberton asks Chloe to help the hero team, but he is attacked by Icicle before he can finish explaining. Clark and Chloe follow the incident to the JSA’s former headquarters, where they connect with Doctor Fate, Hawkman, and Stargirl. Rather than simply introducing new companions, the story begins with the current characters taking on an unfinished problem left behind by a team from the previous generation.
The Legacy of the Past and Cooperation Between New Generations
DC explains that the special introduces the team that preceded the Justice League, while an enemy from the JSA’s past tests its legacy. Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Stargirl highlight the need for responsibility and cooperation as heroes to Clark and Oliver Queen’s generation. The JSA’s arrival therefore not only expands the number of characters in the universe, but also serves as the catalyst for scattered young heroes to become a team.
Two Chapters as One Special
Before it aired, the two parts were planned separately as ‘Society’ and ‘Legends’ but were scheduled as a single special. Glen Winter directed the first half, Tom Welling directed the second half, and Geoff Johns wrote the script. The two-hour format is used to connect the JSA’s past, the threat in the present, and Clark’s group working together within a single incident.
