Greta Gerwig’s 《Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew》 begins in a time period earlier than the existing Narnia stories. It is the first film adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s novel of the same name, centering on the moment Narnia is born. The released footage alternates between scenes of children from London heading toward another world and landscapes of Narnia before it has been created, making clear that the film is both a prequel and an origin story for the world.
At the center of the story are Digory and Polly. The two children enter the mysterious place that connects the worlds, known as the ‘Wood Between the Worlds,’ while Digory’s uncle Andrew and Jadis also become entangled in their journey. According to information released by Netflix, David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell play the two leads, while Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, and others also appear. Rather than revisiting the familiar Narnia, the film’s distinctive feature is that it shows how the world began through the eyes of new characters.
Gerwig is handling both the screenplay and direction, and the film will be released in IMAX and theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027. IMAX previews begin two days earlier, on February 10, and the Netflix release date is April 2. The schedule, moving from a big-screen release to streaming, allows the scale of Narnia’s creation scenes and its journeys between multiple worlds to be experienced differently in theaters and at home.
